Darrel Bartholomeusz

Darrel’s passion for travel, wildlife, conservation of fauna & flora and photography has given him insight into the management of eco-friendly hospitality and currently Darrel is a partner of Yala Wild Hut, and also manages a luxury safari camp just outside Wilpattu National Park.

Being a core committee member and secretary of the Wildlife & Nature Protection Society for over ten years has enabled Darrel to better understand the needs of conservation in Sri Lanka and the need to educate the next generation in respect to protecting our fauna. Darrel has worked with the late Dr Ravi Samarasinghe on a project to protect leopard outside national parks by introducing cages for cattle that were been attacked by leopards and been killed by the cattle herders , which to-date proves to be one of the most successful projects in saving leopards in Sri Lanka from the human wildlife conflict (HWC).

Darrel also organizes wildlife photography tours in Sri Lanka and in 2006 he was the runner up for Wildlife photographer of the year in Sri Lanka. His photographs have appeared in various magazines and have been used within the garment industry as well.

Darrel worked in the garment industry in Sri Lanka for 25 years and 15 years at the MAS group of companies, before leaving the corporate world to pursue his interest in the outdoor hospitality trade.
